It was the 5th event arranged in collaboration with different organizations exploring the inter-linkages between bioenergy and water and ways to address related risks and harness opportunities, and builds on the workshop “Spotlight on Energy and Water” organized by the Task together with Oeko Institute and UNEP in July 2010.

Since the 2010 workshop, several organisations have undertaken related work and some gaps identified at the first workshop have been closed, but others remain. The 2014 workshop was organized to develop a co-ordinated and common approach to addressing and communicating water-related issues for bioenergy. The common vision derived at the workshop is good management of resources – benefiting from complementarity of different systems -can provide food, bioenergy and biomaterials AND improve the state of water. The workshop specifically explored how integration of bioenergy systems into forest and agricultural landscapes can deliver positive outcomes for environment and socio-economy.

The workshop drilled deeper into assessment, policy and implementation issues, as well as data gaps. The participants identified strategic priorities to enable the benefits of bioenergy to be captured and delivered. A set of common goals was agreed and possible contributions from the represented organizations were identified. Based on this, a work plan and a group communication strategy will be developed.

Organized by: Pinchot Institute for Conservation, IEA Bioenergy Task 43 & Task 40

Savannah, Georgia, October 23-24, 2013

Conference website including webinar from Workshop summary Feb 27,2014: please click here

Organized by: IEA Bioenergy Task 43

Rotterdam, Netherlands, March 12-14, 2013

Workshop Agenda and presentations: please click here Summary: A strategic study by IEA Bioenergy Tasks 40, 43 and 38 aimed to monitor the actual implementation process of sustainability certification of bioenergy, and to obtain a view on how certification schemes are operating and impacting markets, taking into account the point of view of different stakeholder groups. Based on a.o. input from over 200 stakeholders, recommendations were made on how sustainability certification can work in bioenergy markets and in fact actually support further deployment. During the workshop, main findings will be presented and discussed with industry and policy makers.

Organized by: IEA Bioenergy Task 40 and 43, the IEA Executive Committee, the Faculty of Forestry, Geomatics and Georgraphy of Laval University, Natural Resources Canada with collaboration from Global Bioenergy Partnership and the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers.

Quebec, Canada, October 3-5, 2012

Strategic Discussion Paper: please click here

Summary: Participants engaged in dialogue critical for the formulation of rational policy to achieve sustainable forest bioenergy production systems. Participants from 11 countries in North America and Europe were present at the workshop, and included policymakers, industry, academia and civil society, representing a variety of organisations from local groups and governmental agencies to international bodies. The event was held at the Forêt Montmorency research station, 100 km north of Quebec City in the Laurentides wildlife reserve. The setting of the event, in the heart of the boreal forest, allowed for access to sites showcasing research trials, forest management activities and unique features of Canada’s forests.

Organized by: Stockholm Environment Institute,IEA Bioenergy Task 43, Chalmers University of Technology, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Humboldt University, FAO, UNCCD Secretariat

Stockholm, Sweden, August 30, 2012

Detailed Agenda: please click here Summary: Can Bioenergy become a key strategy for climate change mitigation without threatening global food security? Can current Institutions, policies and assessment tools ensure sustainable and equitable development of bioenergy? This seminar targets anyone interested in aspects of water management for food and bioenergy, including planners, decision makers and researchers, eg. people making assessments of bioenergy production, and those relying on the output of these assessments to support policy setting and decision making. Join the seminar to discuss these and many other questions related to the links between water and bioenergy.

IEA Bioenergy

Vienna, Austria, November 13-15, 2012

Initial Announcement: please click here

Jointly organized by COST Action FP0902 and IEA Bioenergy Task 43

Lison, Portugal, September 19-20, 2012

Initial Announcement: please click here Summary: The goal of this one-day workshop is to give an overview of the issues involved in achieving economically sustainable forest bioenergy supply chains from regional to international scales. The workshop will consist of presentations given by members of COST Action FP0902 and IEA Bioenergy Task 43 thereby covering a wide range of topics with different viewpoints. Furthermore, the workshop aims to introduce different methodologies to evaluate economic performance and costs of forest fuel supply chains. Finally, as multidisciplinary efforts to mobilize sustainable forest fuel supply chains are becoming increasingly important recent efforts in that field are also presented.

Organized by IEA Bioenergy Task 43

Charleston, South Carolina, February 21, 2012

Final Workshop Program: please click here

Hosted by:

Jointly organized by Bioenergy Australia and IEA Bioenergy Task 43

Sunshine Coast, Queensland, November 25, 2011

Final Workshop Agenda: please click here

Hosted by:

Jointly organized by IEA Bioenergy

Task38: Greenhouse Gas Balances of Biomass and Bioenergy SystemsTask, 40: Sustainable International Bioenergy Trade – Securing Supply and DemandTask, 43: Biomass Feedstocks for Energy Markets

Campinas, Brazil, September 19-21, 2011

Final Announcement and Registration Detail: please click here

Hosted by:

Jointly organized by Focali, Sis och, IEA Bioenergy Task 43

Chalmers, Gothenburg, March 28, 2011 @13:15-15:00

For the 1st Announcement please click here
